A tribute to the diversity of the insect world. This is mostly the Buchla, but there is also one sound that comes from a simple synth that I made in Max/MSP.

Celebrating distortion in all its earthly forms

Nice work. I like the frequency shifted sounds lurking in the background. Very rich and evolving.
I'd love to hear a surround-sound version - although then I might need a fly swatter or can of bug spray...
I just scrolled down your page to discover that I've been here before... several times in the last year. I really enjoyed seeing the evolution in your work with the 200e from the simple drones you first posted to these more complete pieces. So I have 2 questions.
What is it about the Buchla that steers the sound towards those randomly timed events, just like so much of Morton Subotnic's work? Are you (and other Buchla users) influenced by him or does the instrument just "go there"?
And what modules were used to generate that sound that is frequency shifted, or ringmodded, or chorused or...?
Thanks for the kind words, all you anonymoutti.
There is no frequency shifter in this one. There are some FM'd oscillators with glissing pitch, as well as some vibrato, which sort of sound like frequency shifting, I guess.
The random stuff _is_ very strong on a Buchla, so those it does make it easier to do complex random stuff than on most systems.
As far as influences, I like a lot of "academic" electronic music:
e.g. Jean-Claude Risset, John Chowning, Paul Lansky, David Wessell, Morton Subotnick, amongst many others.
I like a lot of 20th century classical composers:
e.g. Stravinsky, Ligeti, Partch, Varesse, Scelsi, among many others
I like some "minimalists", although I'm not crazy about that label:
e.g. Terry Riley, Steve Reich, and a few others
I like some electric jazz, and some fusion:
e.g. Miles, Mahavishnu...
I like some "art rock"
Magma, Henry Cow, Univers Zero, Art Zoyd, Hatfield and the North...
I like many of Wendy Carlos' pieces, although I'm not sure where to put her.
I like other stuff too :-)
